Newtech provided health physics staffing and technical support services at this facility. Performed work for several entities at this site – Kerr-McGee, Tronox, Metawise, and Greenfield Environmental Multistate Trust. The facility operates under State of Alabama radioactive materials license and originally processed rutile ore for extraction of titanium dioxide. The process generated approximately 2,000,000 yd3 of iron oxide tailings contaminated with low levels of natural thorium. Newtech personnel provided health physics consulting, assisted in licensing of the site and regulatory compliance, hired a support staff of 12 HP technicians and supported operations geared toward the removal and sale of the iron oxide tailings. Subsequent work at the site involved continued HP monitoring and Instrumentation and Controls support for the water treatment plant onsite.
